INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: A NEW BEGINNING

A New Beginning, what does that make you think of? Something exciting, challenging, refreshing? This theme creates different expectations with everyone.

To us, the theme A New Beginning stands for dealing with new challenges, facing new hurdles we might encounter on the path of our life. It also stands for developing yourself, finding new ways to achieve your goals, meeting new people, broadening your horizon.
There cannot be a new beginning without another beginning’s end. Andre Gide said “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

The recent unprecedented period has shown us how it feels to be limited as to what you can do, whom you can see and where you can go. Difficult times that make us realise that only too often we take life for granted. Now more than ever we are looking to reconnect with others, with nature and everything that can make us feel good.

Sub-themes such as inception, birth, starting point, change of life and freedom are all in line with this topic. Moreover, we are looking to generate positive feelings towards and appreciation of values such as curiosity and excitement (“Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be” - Marsha Petrie Sue), bravery (start a new adventure), freedom and thankfulness (“There is always a new beginning. Doors are unlimited, always open, if one closes at that moment another one opens” - Vandana Agarwal).

The festival aims to discover a variety of topics within this theme which will provide us with diverse short film narratives. Through visual storytelling, we hope to inspire the audience and make the visitors reflect on what they have been watching.

1) Films completed after: January 1st, 2019
2) Maximum duration: 30 minutes
3) Country of production: All countries
4) Screening format: .mp4 or .mov
5) Accepted genres: All genres
6) Language: OV with English subtitles. Films where the original version is English don’t necessarily need subtitles.
7) Theme: A New Beginning (See description above)
