LIVE-ACTION COMPETITION -INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

The Live-action Competition consists of three categories: International, Asia International and Japan. The short films that receive the Best Short Award will be eligible for nomination at the annual Academy Awards® the following year.

Opening submissions: August 1, 2023
Early deadline: September 30, 2023 25 USD
Regular deadline: November 30, 2023 35 USD
Final deadline: January 31, 2024 45 USD
Notification of results: April 25, 2024

Preview format:
-Uploaded file (1 stamp)

Requirements:
1) Films completed after: June 1st, 2022
2) Maximum duration: 25 minutes (including end credits)
3) Country of production: all countries except Asian countries *
4) Screening format: ProRes File
5) Accepted genres: all genres, except music videos, animation and non-fiction
6) Language: English subtitles are required for submissions with language/s other than English or Japanese.
7) Japanese Premiere ONLY: Your film MUST keep the Japan premiere status until Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2024 in Tokyo ends. The following will affect Japan premiere status and will be disqualified. - Films screened in Japan on any media and for any occasion including screening events, film festivals and so forth before and/or during Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2024 in Tokyo. - Films streamed online with Japanese subtitles and/or in the Japanese language before and/or during Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2024 in Tokyo. - Non-dialogue films available online will be ineligible. *If the film is in a non-Japanese language and/or has no Japanese subtitles and is available online outside of Japan, it will still be eligible for the competition.

【FESTIVAL TOUR】
The National and International Tour of the Festival will take place after SSFF & ASIA 2024 in Tokyo ends. All selected films will be screened in Tokyo, but not all selected films will be screened at all locations. The filmmakers will be notified in case their films will be screened in the tour.

We look for a wide range of animated short films! The Best Short Award Winner will be eligible for nomination at the annual Academy Award® the following year.

Documentary motion picture. It may employ any techniques as long as the film is made as a non-fiction film and the emphasis is on fact and not on fiction.The Best Short Award will be eligible for nomination at the annual Academy Awards® the following year.

CINEMATIC TOKYO COMPETITION

Calling for short films that take "Tokyo" as their subject.“Tokyo” must feature in the film. You do not have to show the real Tokyo/shoot in Tokyo, however, as depictions can be based on your imagination or fiction.
Examples) Films shot in and around Tokyo, Films depicting locations or objects based on the image of “Tokyo”, Films depicting Tokyo 100 years from now.

The selected films for this competition will be streamed online on the official festival online venue during the festival period.
